Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that typically emerge in your late teens or early twenties. While some people have enough room for them to grow in perfectly, many of us face a "traffic jam" in the back of the mouth. When there isn't enough space, these teeth can become impacted, meaning they get stuck under the gums or grow in at an angle.
Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a variety of issues, from dull aches to sudden swelling.
Because they are so far back and often partially covered by gum tissue, they are incredibly difficult to clean. This makes them a magnet for bacteria, which can lead to painful infections or even damage the healthy molars sitting right next to them.
Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed, but we monitor them closely with X-rays to see how they are developing. It’s all about preventing future crowding and protecting the alignment of your other teeth. If you start feeling pressure or notice redness at the very back of your jaw, it’s time for a checkup. Whether we simply monitor their progress or recommend a gentle removal, the goal is always to keep your mouth comfortable and infection-free.
At Petras Family Dental in Amherstburg, we use imaging to keep a close eye on your wisdom teeth and ensure your smile stays healthy. We’re here to answer any questions you have about your oral development. Contact us at 519-713-8985 or visit petrasfamilydental.ca/book to book your appointment
