Why Are My Gums Bleeding? What Your Mouth Is Trying to Tell You

Have you ever noticed a little pink in the sink after brushing or flossing? Many people see bleeding gums and assume it's normal, or that they just brushed too hard. The truth is, healthy gums shouldn't bleed during your daily routine. When they do, it's often the earliest warning sign that something needs your attention. Catching it early can save you from bigger problems down the road, including tooth loss.
The most common reason gums bleed is a buildup of plaque along the gumline. Plaque is that sticky, fuzzy film you feel on your teeth at the end of the day, and it's full of bacteria. When plaque sits too long, it irritates your gums and causes a condition called gingivitis. Gingivitis makes gums red, puffy, and prone to bleeding. The good news is that gingivitis is completely reversible with proper care. The not-so-good news? If it's ignored, it can develop into gum disease (periodontitis), which damages the bone that holds your teeth in place.
Other things can also cause your gums to bleed. Skipping flossing for a long time and then suddenly starting again can make gums bleed for a few days until they get used to it (this is normal and a good sign you're getting back on track). Brushing too hard with a stiff-bristled toothbrush can also irritate your gums. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, certain medications like blood thinners, vitamin deficiencies, and even stress can all play a role too. That's why bleeding gums shouldn't just be brushed off — they're often a clue about your overall health.
The best way to keep your gums happy is with simple, consistent care. Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, floss gently every day, and don't skip your regular cleanings. Drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced diet with enough vitamin C, and avoiding tobacco all go a long way too. If your gums have been bleeding for more than a week, or if you notice them pulling away from your teeth, it's time to see your dentist.
