Why Do My Teeth Feel Sticky? Understanding Plaque

Have you ever woken up and felt a "fuzzy" or sticky coating on your teeth? That’s plaque—a colorless film of bacteria that is constantly forming in everyone's mouth. While it’s natural, if it’s not cleaned off daily, it can lead to bad breath, cavities, and gum disease.
Plaque loves the sugars and starches in the food you eat. When they mix, the bacteria produce acids that attack your tooth enamel. Over time, these acid attacks can break down the enamel and create small holes, which we know as cavities.
If plaque stays on your teeth for more than a day or two, it begins to harden into tartar (also called calculus). Once it becomes tartar, it’s like "dental concrete"—it cannot be removed with a toothbrush and must be scraped away by a dental professional using specialized tools.
The best way to keep plaque under control is a simple 2-2-2 rule: brush twice a day, for two minutes, and visit the dentist twice a year. Using a fluoride toothpaste helps strengthen your enamel against those bacterial acid attacks, making your teeth more resilient.
At Petras Family Dental in Amherstburg, our thorough cleanings remove the plaque and tartar that home brushing might miss. We want to help you keep that "just-cleaned" feeling every day. Contact us at 519-713-8985 or visit petrasfamilydental.ca/book to book your appointmen
