Demystifying Tooth Extractions: What to Expect and How to Heal

While our main goal in dentistry is always to preserve your natural teeth, there are times when removing a tooth is the healthiest choice for your entire mouth. Hearing that you need a tooth extraction can cause a bit of anxiety, but understanding why the procedure is necessary and how modern techniques keep you comfortable can help ease your mind. Whether it's due to a severe fracture, deep decay that has reached the nerve, advanced gum disease, or an impacted wisdom tooth, an extraction is ultimately performed to stop pain and prevent infection from spreading.

Thanks to modern dental advancements, a tooth extraction is a highly routine and comfortable procedure. Before we begin, we use local anesthetics to completely numb the tooth, jawbone, and surrounding gum tissue. While you may feel a sensation of pressure as we gently loosen the tooth to lift it out, you should not feel any sharp pain. Our priority is to ensure you feel completely relaxed and secure throughout your visit.

Once the tooth is removed, your body immediately begins the natural healing process by forming a protective blood clot in the empty socket. Protecting this clot is the single most important part of your recovery, as it shields the exposed bone and nerves while the tissues heal. To prevent a painful condition called "dry socket"—which happens if the clot is accidentally dislodged—you should strictly avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, or spitting forcefully for the first few days after your procedure.

During the first 24 to 48 hours, sticking to a diet of soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce, and soup is highly recommended to avoid irritating the area. Applying a cold compress to your cheek in 20-minute intervals can also help minimize any minor swelling. As your mouth heals over the following weeks, we can discuss excellent options to restore your bite and prevent your other teeth from shifting, such as modern dental implants, bridges, or custom partial dentures.
