Flossing: It’s Not Just for Getting Food Out

Many people only reach for the floss when they feel a piece of popcorn or steak stuck between their teeth. However, the real purpose of flossing is to remove plaque—that invisible, sticky film of bacteria—from the areas your toothbrush simply cannot reach. If plaque stays between your teeth, it eventually hardens into tartar and causes cavities.

Think of each tooth as having five surfaces. If you only brush, you are leaving two of those five surfaces dirty! Flossing allows you to clean the "sides" of the teeth, which is where many of the most destructive cavities and the earliest signs of gum disease begin.

If your gums bleed when you floss, it’s actually a sign that you need to floss more, not less. Bleeding is usually a symptom of inflammation caused by trapped bacteria. After about a week of consistent, gentle flossing, the inflammation typically goes down, and the bleeding will stop as your gums become healthier and firmer.

There are many ways to clean between your teeth if traditional string floss is difficult for you. Floss picks, water flossers, and tiny "interdental" brushes are all great alternatives. The best tool is the one that you will actually use every single day.

At Petras Family Dental in Amherstburg, we are here to help you find a flossing routine that fits your lifestyle. We’ll show you the easiest ways to keep those hidden surfaces clean and healthy. Contact us at 519-713-8985 or visit petrasfamilydental.ca/book to book your appointment.
