How Often Do I Really Need to Change My Toothbrush?

It’s an easy detail to overlook in your daily routine, but patients frequently ask us how long they should keep using the same toothbrush. As a general rule of thumb, you should replace your manual toothbrush or electric brush head every three to four months. Over weeks of daily use, the bristles naturally lose their stiffness and begin to fray, flare out, or bend.
Once a toothbrush becomes frayed, it loses its ability to clean your teeth effectively. Bent bristles can no longer navigate into the tight spaces between your teeth or properly sweep away plaque along the delicate gumline. Furthermore, using a heavily worn brush can actually scratch your gums and accelerate gum recession over time.
Another critical reason to swap your brush is health-related. If you have recently recovered from a cold, flu, or a throat infection, you should throw your toothbrush away immediately. Bacteria and viruses can easily take up residence among the damp bristles, putting you at risk of accidentally reinfecting yourself or spreading germs.
Keeping a small stash of spare toothbrushes in your cabinet is an excellent way to ensure you always have a fresh one ready. If you notice that your brush bristles look crushed or flared out after only a few weeks, it may be a helpful sign that you are pressing much too hard when you clean.
