Is Mouthwash a Necessary Step, or Just an Extra?

Many patients stand in the dental aisle wondering if adding mouthwash to their shopping cart is truly worth it. The answer depends heavily on your unique oral health goals. While mouthwash can be a phenomenal addition to your daily routine, it is important to remember that it is a supporter, not a replacement for traditional brushing and flossing.

Think of mouthwash as a liquid tool that can reach areas a brush might miss. Therapeutic mouthwashes contain active ingredients designed to kill harmful bacteria, reduce plaque buildup, and help fight off early gum disease. Others feature fluoride, which actively bonds with your enamel to make your teeth more resilient against bacterial acid attacks throughout the day.

However, swishing with mouthwash cannot physically remove the sticky film of plaque that binds to your teeth. Only the mechanical action of a toothbrush and dental floss can break that bond and clear it away. If you use mouthwash to mask bad breath without brushing properly, you are simply covering up the odor-causing bacteria rather than solving the problem.
