The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to help lower-income Canadian residents access dental care. If you don't have access to private dental insurance and your adjusted family net income is less than $90,000, you likely qualify for this program. Navigating government applications can sometimes feel overwhelming, but breaking down the process makes signing up straightforward.

The first step is verifying your eligibility before you begin. To qualify, you must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes and have filed your tax return for the previous year. The program looks directly at your tax filings to verify your family net income, so staying up to date on your taxes is an absolute prerequisite. Once your eligibility window opens based on your age or disability status, you will receive an invitation letter from Service Canada with a unique application code.

Once you have your letter or know your demographic group is open for enrollment, the easiest way to apply is online through the official Service Canada portal. You will need your Social Security Number (SIN), date of birth, address, and your tax return from the previous year handy. If you prefer a human touch or don't have internet access, you can also apply over the phone or in person at a local Service Canada office by bringing your identification and tax information with you.

After your application is processed and approved, you will receive a welcome package in the mail from Sun Life, the insurance provider managing the plan. This package contains your member card and details your specific coverage date. It’s important to note that the CDCP covers a percentage of the dental costs based on your income bracket, so reviewing your welcome letter will tell you exactly what portion of your routine cleanings, fillings, or exams will be covered.
