The Link Between Pregnancy and Gum Health

If you are expecting, you have a lot on your plate, but don’t forget about your smile! Hormonal changes during pregnancy can make your gums much more sensitive to plaque. This often leads to "pregnancy gingivitis," where the gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily.

It is a myth that you should avoid the dentist while pregnant. In fact, it is more important than ever. Untreated gum infections have been linked to complications like preterm birth and low birth weight. Routine cleanings and even most necessary dental work are perfectly safe and highly recommended for the health of both mom and baby.

Morning sickness can also take a toll on your teeth. If you experience vomiting, the stomach acid can wear down your enamel. Don't brush immediately after; instead, rinse with a mixture of water and a teaspoon of baking soda to neutralize the acid, then brush about 30 minutes later.

Maintaining a healthy diet and staying on top of your oral hygiene will help you avoid dental issues during this busy time. Your baby’s health starts with your health, and that includes your mouth!
