Silver Diamine Fluoride

Slow down decay progress with silver fluoride.

Service Description

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a powerful, liquid medication used to quickly stop cavities from growing. It is a non-invasive alternative to traditional "drilling and filling," making it an excellent option for specific situations where a standard procedure might be difficult or unnecessary. Why You Might Need SDF While traditional fillings are the standard for restoring a tooth's shape, SDF is used to "freeze" decay in its tracks. Our team may recommend this treatment for several reasons: Young Children: It is ideal for very young patients who may not be able to sit still for a traditional filling. Hard-to-Reach Cavities: It can be used on baby teeth that are close to falling out, avoiding the need for more complex work. Special Needs or Anxiety: For patients with severe dental anxiety or physical limitations, SDF offers a fast, painless way to manage decay. Stopping Sensitivity: In addition to treating cavities, SDF is highly effective at reducing tooth sensitivity. Wait-and-Watch Situations: It can buy time for a patient who is waiting for more extensive dental work. How It Works: The "Two-Step" Defense SDF works through a combination of two main ingredients that work together to protect the tooth: The Silver (The Germ-Fighter): Silver has been used for centuries for its ability to kill bacteria. In SDF, the silver acts as an antimicrobial agent that destroys the bacteria causing the cavity. The Fluoride (The Strengthener): Fluoride is a mineral that helps rebuild and harden the tooth enamel. Once the bacteria are gone, the fluoride helps "re-mineralize" the area, making it resistant to future acid attacks. The Application Process The process is incredibly simple and takes only a few minutes: Step 1: The dentist dries the tooth thoroughly. Step 2: A tiny drop of the liquid is painted onto the cavity using a small brush. Step 3: The liquid is allowed to soak in for about a minute. Important Note on Appearance It is important to know that when SDF successfully stops a cavity, the decayed area will turn permanently black. This change in color is actually a good sign—it proves that the silver has bonded to the tooth and the infection is no longer active. Because of this, we typically use SDF on back teeth or baby teeth where the dark spot won't be as noticeable.
