Wisdom Teeth Referral
Get prepared to see an oral surgeon to remove your wisdom teeth.
Service Description
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop, usually appearing in your teens or early twenties. While some people have enough room for them to grow in perfectly, many of us face complications that make wisdom tooth extraction the healthiest choice for a long-term smile. Why Wisdom Teeth Often Need to Go Because our jaws are often not large enough to accommodate these extra teeth, several issues can arise: Impaction: This happens when a tooth is "stuck" under the gum or bone, or is growing in at an angle. This can cause significant pain and pressure. Crowding: As wisdom teeth push their way in, they can shove your other teeth out of alignment. Infection and Decay: Because they are so far back in the mouth, wisdom teeth are incredibly difficult to clean. This makes them magnets for bacteria, leading to gum infections (pericoronitis) or deep cavities. Cyst Formation: In rare cases, a sac of fluid can form around an impacted tooth, which can damage the surrounding bone or tooth roots. How We Handle Extractions in Our Office Our dentists are experienced at performing extractions. If your wisdom teeth have erupted through the gum line and have straight roots, we can often perform the procedure right here in our office. When a Referral is Necessary Not all wisdom teeth are created equal. Some cases are more complex and require the specialized equipment and training of an Oral Surgeon. We will refer you to a specialist if: Complex Impaction: If the tooth is buried deep in the jawbone or is laying sideways against your other teeth. Proximity to Nerves: If your X-rays show the tooth roots are tangled with the main sensory nerves of the jaw. The Need for Sedation: While we use local freezing, some patients prefer to be "put to sleep" (general anesthesia or IV sedation) for the procedure. The Next Steps The process begins with a consultation and a digital X-ray to see exactly where your wisdom teeth are hiding. If it is a straightforward case, we can take care of you here. If it is more complex, we will coordinate with a trusted local oral surgeon to ensure you get the expert care you need. Either way, our goal is to get you back to feeling your best as quickly as possible!
